Best out there

I've tried most of the helmets out there. Why is the Tracer the best? First and most importantly, it's one of the few out there that offers some rear, side, and front impact protection. A common fatal accident is tripping over rope on lead and hitting the back of the head. The half dome and armour helmets only have foam on the top of the helmet, offering no significant impact protection around the edges. The Petzl Meteor 3 offers even more protection all around, but I found it too bulky. The Mammut Tripod is also a full foam helmet, less expensive, and also recommended. But the Tracer I found to be the best because it's relatively lower profile, less bulk, and it's available in three sizes for a better fit.

Best Climbing Helmet Available

Different heads will fit different helmets, but for me I tried the 3 or 4 "ultra-light" climbing helmets currently available and this one had the best combination of fit, adjustability for wearing a wool hat in cold weather, and of course the super-light weight.The only complaint I have, which I have seen others complain about, is that the strap that goes behind your ears is positioned too far forwards, so that it can dig into the back of your ears. My current solution is to let the strap go over my ears, in which case I don't even notice it is there. I have seen someone else use an elastic band to hold the strap further back which would also work.Bottom line is that the helmet is so light and comfortable you forget you're wearing it, which means you wear it all the time and don't have to worry as much about your precious skull-cargo.

Finally a LIGHT helmet that FITS!

These helmets are VERY light and come in multiple sizes! Small, Medium and Large.We wanted a helmet like the Petzl Meteor III, but that one comes only in one size - HUGE! Even though the Meteor supposedly fits 53cm heads, it is quite a stretch to say that it does.The shell of the Petzl helmet is really large. If you have a large head, the Meteor III would probably be a great choice.We also tried the BD Half Dome, which has more than one size, but it was the old hard plastic and was quite a bit heavier. With our neck injuries, we could not use it. Plus, it just wasn't that comfortable aside from the weight.So we wanted one of these new types of shells (EPS Foam) instead of the old hard plastic shells, but one that would fit. The Tracer does fit very well. Yes, all the EPS foam helmets are less durable in the sense that you can't just throw them around and sit on them, but for the comfort and lack of neck pain while belaying -- its worth the trouble, at least for us.Plus, the ventilation holes on the Tracer have a mesh that protects from debris coming into the helmet.Yes, it could use some work on the strap system, but we found it fit behind our ears ok.We are very happy with it. The one size fits all concept just isn't working for us, so we are glad we found the Tracer.
