The best portable tool box.
By D B
I have had one of these for years. Got it when I was running a farm in Kansas. Montezuma is a town in western Kansas and a welding shop there makes these. They are the standard box in the area that farmers carry in their pickups. The great thing about them is that they keep all the sockets and wrenches exactly in place, even on rough roads. In fact, the lid closes over the pins and compartments in such a way that you can physically turn the box upside down, shake and roll it all over the place-then right it and open the lid-and everything is still in it's place!!! They are absolutely water tight, and if you mount them securely and lock the lid they are theft resistant. I made a swing out mount for mine, it sits along the side and occupies the area right behind the wheelwell. Then when I open the tailgate, I can swing it out (it hinges in the corner near the tailgate) over the tailgate for easy access. It is nicely out of the way when stowed. Mine was not powder coated, that is a great improvement. It is kind of expensive, but worth it if you need to securly carry a complete set of tools in your vehicle. They do make several different configurations of this box for different purposes.

Great Top Box - Much Better Quality Than SnapOn
By alexanderaku
I purchased my Montezuma LA400R over a year back. This size box was about all that could properly fit the top of a 1980 model SnapOn cabinet I've had for 31 years now. I much prefer the Montezuma for the outstanding tool layout and access it offers, not to mention it holds more tools than the matching SnapOn Top Box to my SnapOn roll cabinet would have room for. The color is also a good match for my older SnapOn rolling floor cabinet. I needed red, and that meant my box had to come direct from the factory, which meant I had to wait longer for delivery as the red model was on backorder when I purchased mine - something you might want to check on before ordering, as the black color was more available.I called the good people at Montezuma tool just before my purchase as the actual measurements shown were a tight fit for the top on my SnapOn cabinet. My experience was they helped me quickly and were very helpful - even telling me when the next shipments of this model in red would be leaving the factory. It didn't take long to store all my loose SnapOn tools in this box, once it had arrived. But, I was faced with the realization the box still looked empty! This thing holds so many more tools, while making all of them more accessible, I had to buy more to fill it up! That was no problem, as I needed metric tools I had never purchased. I just ended up buying many more tools than I thought it would take to fill this Montezuma box. The layout is so good you'll never be hunting or digging for a tool in this box - they are always right at your finger tips and well displayed! The box is also extremely sturdy - even more-so than my SnapOn roll cabinet. The side handles are great also. It will take two strong people to lift it when full of tools, but the handles won't bend or break. I actually lifted it full, and set it in place on my SnapOn roll cabinet using a Kubota front-end loader bucket and ropes through those handles - so the balance at the handles is also good. The lid has a truck box style locking latch and the box shipped "truck freight" with two keys, and in a very sturdy protective crate. The lid also has a full gasket seal to prevent the elements from entering the box with the lid closed, and the feel of the lid is solid. A gas charged shock connection holds the lid up while the box is open - nothing cheap about it all. Trays and tool holders are HEAVY gauge - just like the welded sheet metal panels on the rest of the box. Every inch is also well painted with the durable powder coat finish. This box looks great, displays and holds tools extremely well, and is rugged to boot. It's really made to take rough treatment in the back of an open industrial work truck. Montezuma Tool absolutely took no shortcuts in the materials or build of this box, and it is without any doubt much stronger and more durable than the SnapOn roll cabinet I have it sitting on.As if all this wasn't enough, this box costs considerably less than any SnapOn box - anywhere near it in size. I bought all SnapOn in 1980, and they are great tools. But, this box really makes one notice SnapOn is a lot more than a tad overpriced on their tool boxes. While I always loved using my SnapOn purchases, they aren't always the best in quality - and they are never bargain priced. This Montezuma box is a real bargain that should last well over several lifetimes - and it is one to pass on to future family members through time. This box weighs about 87 lbs. empty (95 with the shipping crate) - so it won't "walk off" easy, and you can always chain it using the handles or bolt it down from the inside. It also comes with durable rubber fitted floor and tray liners - SnapOn makes you pay extra for those, and you have to cut theirs to fit. I like this box better than any SnapOn box made that I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty of nice SnapOn boxes over the years. My SnapOn sticker on the SnapOn cabinet says "I Own The Best". Now I know I do when I look at this Montezuma LA400R box sitting on top.Dimensions: Base - 30" width x 19" depth, Height - 20 1/8"Capacity: 8,581 cu. in.

One Great Tool Chest
By James Moore
I have wanted one of these boxes for a while now and finally I have one. However instead of mounting it to the bed of my work truck I built an angle iron base frame with rollers so I could roll it to the back of the flat bed when I need it. And roll it up to the back of the cab when done. Two locking hasps keep it secured to the back of the cab when not in use and keep it from growing legs when no one's looking. One really nice feature of this box is that all of the sockets, wrenches, screw drivers are securely held in place when the lid of the tool chest is closed. This keeps my tools from wandering around the inside of the box while I'm driving around the ranch. Another nice feature of this style tool box is that every tool is visible and within easy reach, no more hard to open drawers to dig through, no more hidden tools rusting on the bottom of that old box. And the powder coat paint all but eliminates scratched and chipped paint. This tool box is built extra heavy duty, with thick metal and no cheesy spot welds. Great construction, made in America, just like in the good ole days. My only regret is that I waited so long to buy one. I highly recommend this tool box to the serious minded mechanic or farm hand who needs a good solid reliable tool box or road chest. Well worth the money!
