Great bars, a little self engineering needed to make them perfect!
By Rando
I love these step bars, especially the price! The only problem I had was mine developed a knocking noise during turning, acceleration, and braking after about 2 weeks. I double checked the bolts several times to make sure they did not loosen up. I finally figured out that the knocking noise was coming from where the brackets were rubbing on the step bars themselves, metal on metal.I went to my local hardware store and picked up an assortment of large nylon, rubber, and metal washers. I bought more than I needed of course, but after playing with it a bit I got a prescription to solve the knocking noise.I placed a 3" rubber washer against the front and rear bracket then a 3" nylon washer, then three 1 1/4" metal washers to take up the void between the bracket and step bar nut-threads, and put the original bolt through and tightened it down good. I also, placed two small rubber washers between the middle bracket and step bar.The rubber washers have seemed to do the trick, and the metal washers that take up the void of space make it so there is no loss of structural integrity.Sometimes you just gotta follow the motto, "made in China, tweeked in the U.S.A."

Adequate, Cheap
By Steven R. Roth
Update: I should have listened to the previous reviewers who discussed the knocking sound. Mine do it too, so it's off the hardware store for fender washers. Since I have to take these off, I'm going to dry them out and fill each end and the center screw hole with Great Stuff to seal the moisture out of them. Maybe they won't rust out quite as fast as others have mentioned. Removed one star for poor mounting design. The Westin people should have understood this problem and solved it before putting these on the market in this state.Original review:There's nothing much fancy about these nerf bars. They're plain powder-coated steel with unremarkable rubber step pads. They fit my '11 Silverado 1500 extended cab as advertised. Mounting hardware is up to the task - they feel reassuringly firm underfoot. No problems there at all. The bar attachment is by three bolts, one at each end and a much less robust center brace. All of these attach to the existing cab mounting bolts. I'd highly recommend that you have an impact wrench on hand to remove those six cab mounting bolts. They're tight and long. All hardware is metric. The bars themselves are adequate. The black finish is okay, but nothing spectacular. It's somewhere about halfway between matte and glossy. There were a few scratches (not through to the metal) on mine from the factory. This occurred prior to packing because of the relatively good protection for shipment does not allow metal to metal contact. The attachment points consist of a thick solid steel block welded to the interior of the bar at each end. There's a threaded post for the center mount. The end mounts do 90% of the work though. The ends don't seal to the mounting brackets, leaving gaps of up to 1/4" where water can get in. You have to be careful to line up the end of the bar against the bracket because it can sit far enough off to the side to cause the bar to be drawn over the bracket, causing a poor fit and bending the end of the bar. When it sits flush, as it's supposed to, torquing it down to the specified amount is fairly easy. USE A TORQUE WRENCH. I'd have liked to see some reinforcement around the bar's mounting surface (a rolled end or welded reinforcing ring), since it's just the end of the tube which is relatively weak. This is probably the weakest aspect of these bars.Your guess is as good as mine as to what, if any, rust prevention exists inside the tubes. It would have been nice if these had been galvanized prior to painting, but for this price, I kind of doubt that. On the other hand, Amazon's price is very reasonable for these, so you can probably accept the risk in this area without feeling abused. This review wouldn't be complete without a strong criticism directed at Westin's instruction-writing people. They're multi-language done in such a way that finding what you want requires paging back and forth and reading all kinds of things you probably won't understand. If they want to include other languages, PLEASE make them a completely separate set of instructions. I HATE languages mixed together. It's 10 times harder to read and use, not to mention that it causes the information you need to be spread out on multiple pages when it could otherwise fit on one.I suppose it's worthwhile to point out that they are well positioned on the truck to fulfill their intended purpose. They make getting in and out of a relatively high cab much easier for those of us of short stature.Would I recommend these to someone else? Probably, with the above caveats. Would I buy them again (like if they rust out)? Nope. I would consider the polished stainless bars from Westin, however.
