Disappointed in Cannon Should have spent a bit more for next step up
By cudaguy
I purchased two of these for my little 14ft local lake boat and have been downrigger fishing for years, I have electric Proos on my 23 footer. I primarilly purchased these because they are Cannon but I have been out 5 or 6 times with them and they are not that fun to use. They recommend 4 or 6 lb weights which is corect for size but the 4 pounders do not pull cable down and you have to hand assist feeding out. The other day I was not having fun at all the counters keep on losing place because of light weight ( I think the counter wheel is too smooth surface) and then the cable fell out of counter wheel and to the side. Not fun at all to pull weight up by hand take apart and get cable in track on moving boat only to have counter totally not work afterward. Ended up telling depth by seeing weights on graph. Will work on and call Cannon about lubing the clutch to get feeding out proper and find out why counters are not counting properly. Time out before weight caught on bottom and while electric trolling motor in reverse and light wind and lossen clutch a bit the cable snapped and I lost complete set up entirely too easy. Serious doubt there could have been 150 lbs pressure on line lightest looking downrigger cable I ever seen. Hopefully I will be back to edit review with happy stuff after have them working better because they are a nice price and Cannon is suppose to be leaders in downriggers. I always had Invaders and Proos and never had all these problems of course ten lb weights may make a difference too keeping cable taught. But they should have counter to pay out spool not on the head with cable running over smooth wheel much more fool proof I would think.

I bought 2 of these for trout fishing in the summer. they work really well. I converted mine to high speed models so they come up faster. all in all, works great for the price.
