Great product for my wife - TIPS on making it quieter and preventing back-flow
By Dexton
After my wife gave birth to my daughter at the hospital, she wanted to breast feed and I supported her decision to do so. After a c-section however, they recommended using a breast pump to get the milk to the baby via the bottle. The unit they had at the hospital was a Medela Symphony, and she loved it. The problem is that it costs over $1,200.00 and we could not afford anything near that at the time for home use. After we read many reviews, we decided to give the Medela Swing Breast Pump a try, and overall we are very impressed with it for a single breast unit. The milk output is very similar to the $1200.00 hospital unit, which is great. Now for the cons that I have read for this product, and a way we found to fix them... The tubing that comes with it causes two undesirable effects. The first issue is that breast milk can back its way into the tubing if you are not careful and can get into the motor, which is bad news all around for many reasons, including contamination (think of weeks old milk trapped in there, yuck). Secondly, it is a bit loud. Not so loud that it wakes everyone up in the house, but loud enough to make watching TV or having a conversation distracting, not to mention making the baby wonder what the heck is going on.** HERE IS HOW WE FIXED these two problems: Purchase a longer length of Medela breast pump tubing. The ones for the Symphony fit the Swing Pump perfectly. We tried the longer tubing that was used with the hospital Symphony model that they gave to us when we left (which is around 42 inches long instead of the included 28 inches long tubing) and the difference was astounding. I would have NEVER thought that a slightly longer tubing would quiet the unit by 80% AND help prevent back-flow, but it did... as weird as it sounds. Using the extra long tubing, we give this unit 5 stars and I hope that they will start including a longer tubing with the unit in the future to fix these issues. Just do a search on Amazon for "Medela Symphony Tubing" and it will work well with the Medela Swing Pump. Hope this helps somebody out.

LOVE this pump

I LOVE this pump! I used the Medela Symphony in the hospital and thought it was a good pump, but I only used one side at a time so didn't really need the double pump option. The Swing is just as good as the Symphony but for less money. I have an abundance of milk and need to pump for comfort and this pump is comfortable, and doesn't hurt at all! It has a rubber cup which conforms to your breast rather than sucking your nipple up into it. I would HIGHLY recommend this pump to everyone!
