great speakers
By Greg T
these came suggested to me by a friend who installs them in many new construction condos that have inwall audio. They have excellent sound for the money, and were very easy to install. would recommend for the budget minded audiophile looking for a good ceiling speaker. I had originally purchased the Bose in wall speakers, and returned them for these, and am happy that i did. They produce some pretty deep base for the size of speaker, turning the ceiling into a bass chamber. most importantly though, the highs are crisp. these work well simply as surround speakers, or as a second main channel (channel B), as they enrichen and help fill the room with ambient sound. I mated them with Klipsch towers and a denon receiver.

Does not beat Klipsch, but...

They come close! I was in the market for quality in-celing speakers that wouldn't break the bank. The newer JBL speakers are the way to go. I had the chance to sound test by visiting friends and family with different setups. I know, every house is different. You can install the exact same speakers in someone else's house and have them sound better/worse depending on the room design/dimensions. For me, I guess I got lucky. These speakers sound great. On sale at Amazon, VERY satisfied with the purchase. Had I won the lottery, I would have asked for Klipsch speakers to be installed in my mansions. As a working Joe, the JBLs are better than good enough.

These JBL's satisfy...

After reading the reviews of these speakers from different websites, I decided to purchase a pair for myself. I am using them for ambient sound in a whole house audio set up. The installation is pretty straight forward. However, as one reviewer wrote, you may have to cut the hole slightly larger than the hole size using the given template. Removing the grill from the speaker was a small challenge. JBL includes a small paper tab tucked under the speaker grill. This is supposed to make removing the grill easy. With each pair of my speakers (installed 4 pairs) the tab would just tear off when you pulled on it to remove it. So, I ended up using a very small jeweler's Phillips point screwdriver to pry the grills off. No big deal.Overall I am very pleased with the sound of the speakers. They produce very clean sound. Using the speakers with a second zone amplifier with no equalization capabilities means you hear the music as recorded and the JBL's reproduce the sound faithfully. Shop around for the best price. The price of these speakers fluctuate from week to week. I always wait until they hit my price point (less than $130.00/pair) before purchasing.I'd recommend them to anyone needing some decent speakers for a whole house audio set-up. If using them for a 5.1 or 7.1 theater set up (ceiling only) you'll need to pair them with a decent subwoofer to get the bass response you're looking for. Some will probably suggest that it's not appropriate to use ceiling speakers for a 5.1 or 7.1 system, but, if that's the only area you have to install your speakers, then you have to use what you've got.
