5Nordic Walking is Wonderful!
By R. Penwell
The poles are well-made and lightweight with comfortable handles. I am really glad I didn't buy the cheap adjustables from China because I would have had to upgrade eventually (turns out I love this pole-walking thing!). They came in good packaging, though they took a while to get to California. I'm not sure yet about the wear on the footpads because I've only had them a month and a half, but they seem to be holding up.I have a Master's degree in Kinesiology and teach group fitness, so I would be able to tell if this pole walking thing was a joke. It's not! The poles improve my walking posture and speed--at my slowest with the poles I do an 18:30 minute mile while my usual power walk is probably a 22 minute mile. My heart rate averages 20 beats higher than my regular power walk, too! This all equals more calories burned and better muscle toning. I've read that Nordic Walking burns anywhere from 20-50% more calories. I think it depends on how slowly you walk normally, and if you have poor posture and technique. You cannot stroll with the poles--they force you to get moving. Since I am 35 years old and fit, I would guess I burn 20% more calories by my speed, fatigue, and sweat. I feel a bit silly, and get some funny looks and giggles in the neighborhood, but the workout feels like it's working, and the rhythmic pace of the poles makes them really fun. I don't mind looking like a dork if it keeps me fit and helps my mood. I strongly recommend going to YouTube and watching an instructional video before using the poles. There is a technique to them.
