4Model PB15-012
By Phyllis F. Silver
On 02-23-08 received cart model PB15-012. After seeing and reviewing all the carts I could find this appeared to be the closest to what I need. I'm 5 miles out on varied forest trails and need axle clearance, a wide angle trailer hitch for sharp ups'n'downs, side hill angles, light weight, bearings vs bushings, volume, axle clearance, axle thickness, body shape, body and frame toughness and price worthiness.I received a call from UPS that it had arrived along with a request to call-in to arrange a specific delivery time.I called the next day and told them that I'd like to come and get it myself to which they put it on "will-call".I went to pick it up the next day.The folks there were friendly and openly explained their "refusal" procedure. I asked about this because, so far, every so-called "ATV cart/trailer" that I has looked at had some serious flaw. I had become doubtful that there was a true ATV trailer. The warehouse guy didn't have any attitudes and surprised me by his willingness to cut open the box so that I could look the cart over.Considering the number of carts that I had considered, this Swisher Model number PB15-012, with a few exceptions, had the features, listed above, that I required.I immediatly began assembly and learned the following.-The pre-punched holed holes in the plastic body are a half-a-bolt too-wideon the longitudinal frame members. They worked but first had to be pushed up at a 45-degree angle then tightened into position. It appears that the manufactuer needs to assemble one of these, now, as the location of the pre-drilled holes in the plastic bed have drifted.-Missing one of the seven wide-washers used under the bolt heads in the bed.-The two axle dust caps, advertised, were missing.-The concept of "sealed bearings" seems a bit confused. This was the first decent set of wheel bearings I've seen. I'ts true that the outer end of the bearings stand to be sealed with the apparently flexible dust cap. Missing, however, is a spring clamp to keep the dust cover on as it hardens and sometimes works loose and falls off.-There is a grease zerk on each wheel but it is uncertain as to how any of this grease is to ever move into the bearings past the plastic seals that are typical to roller bearings.-The grease will apparently fill the space inside the wheel between the roller bearings.-There is missing, however, a seal to protect the inner roller bearing from water and dust other than a preponderance of grease. There is no inner seal. Here I think of the seal on boat trailers.-The wheels have the inner and outer bearings pressed into them. They work onto the axles easily enough. Upon greasing the zerks the grease starts to come out around the small space between the mating surfaces of the inner race-to-the-axle. This will help the inner race to spin on the axle. Considering that the inner bearings have no actual seal to keep out water (Das Boot) and dust it gives me chill to think of the possibilites here. I will have to monitor/maintain this unless I can think of a way to invent a better seal, i.e. O-rings/rubber washers.-The lip on the 2" trailer hitch is too excessive for the ups-n-downs thatI travel on. It binds early-on and does not allow for the ups-n-down range of travel that I need. Someone at the company might go out and experience a few "Kelly-humps" to know that for true ATV usage there needs be more travel in the hitch. I ground off the the lip and bought a thin-necked hitch-ball to bring it into usage.Note that these are some technical recommendations that I hope that Swisher would incorporate in the future. The Swisher ATV cart/trailer is the best I have found. I recommend that anyone looking for one of these look at this cart for true ATV outdoor in-the-mountains use.Eldorado
