5A useful tool that is borrowed a lot...
By DMA
I bought the MemoScan U581 about a year ago, and it's really gotten a lot more use than I thought it would. We have two Hondas - an 01 Civic and an 02 Accord, and since the warranties are up, I thought having a code reader might come in handy for troubleshooting purposes. I did some research, and I found this unit seemed to have a good balance of features and affordability. It gives full-text summaries of errors (not just the codes); it can also do live data captures, and its software can be updated via the manufacturer's website. I loan this out quite a bit to friends, and it's always worked with their varied vehicles. The manual could be a little better written, but it's decipherable. Overall, in my opinion, the U581 is a sophisticated diagnostic tool at a reasonable price.

5How to update your Memoscan U581
By EAZ
How to update your Memoscan U581. Instructions.......in English :-)At this time you can only update your Memoscan U581 using a Windows XP machine.Keep in mind that the name of the websites, files, folders, etc. may change in the future.1. Go to www.memoscan.cn2. Go to the "Downloading" section and download the following 2 files.3. Find "U581.....ENGLISH" and save it to your desktop.4. Find "U Serial memo scanne usb driver" and save it to your desktop.5. Go to your desktop and extract both .RAR files. If you can't open .rar files you'll need to download and install WinRAR (www.rarlab.com).6. Open the "U Serial....." folder and open the CH341SER.EXE file.7. A setup program will open. Click the Install button.8. After the install click the OK button and close the setup program.9. Open the "U581.....ENGLISH" folder and find "REGMSCOMM.exe"10. Run "REGMSCOMM.exe" and press OK when complete.11. Connect your U581 to your computer. I used a TRENDnet USB to Serial Converter TU-S9 (Blue).12. You now need to open your "Device Manager" to determine which COM your U581 is currently using. To do this in Windows XP click Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager.13. In Device Manager find "Ports (COM & LPT)" and click the + button. You should see your device, mine was called "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM8)". The COM# will change depending on which USB port you are connected to.14. Now you can open "uif_isp.exe" in the "U581.....ENGLISH" folder".15. Select the COM (mine was COM8) from the drop down menu.16. Click the "Open File" button. In the Open File window go to your desktop, find the "U581.....ENGLISH" folder and open it. Find the "U581.....ENGLISH.uif" file. Select it and press the Open button. There is no response from the program letting you know it worked, just continue with the next step.17. With your U581 OFF, but connected to your computer press the "Update" button, "We are connecting..." will be displayed. You must now press the On (Power) button on your U581. If you do not press the On button when the program is searching the connection will fail. If you have the wrong COM# selected the connection will fail.18. The program will start updating. It takes a few minutes. When the update is complete your U581 will restart (beep). You can now quit the program and disconnect your U581.With that out of the way I'll say that my Memoscan has been pretty good. I'm satisfied with the results. I've used it on Ford, Chevrolet, Honda and probably a few others. It's been helpful and definitely saved me time and probably a few dollars.

4U581 Memoscanner
By John The Sailor
I bought my scanner in Oct. 21, 2008. It came very quickly by the seller. And when using it at first, I had mixed results. Some times it would work fine and other times it would shut down after trying to connect to the Auto Link. Later I found out that you must press the enter button and release quickly, other wise it would think you wanted it to shut down, which it did. If you go pass the 30 day grace period, don't expect any support from the seller or the manufacture. They will not return your E-Mails. The unit performed as advertised and the up dating of software is probably a little more complicated than the average computer person can handle, but it can be accomplished. Thanks John
