I've been shooting with Profoto strobes for over fifteen years and they've been fantastic in all conditions. I love the monolights and my two pack systems are nearly indestructible. So why am I writing a review about the Elinchrom Ranger system? Well, I bought a Profoto 600b system a few years ago because it fit in my budget but I watched Will Crockett shoot with the Elinchroms and the ease with which he could make all the settings on the pack wirelessly was hypnotic. When I had the opportunity to pick up the system at a great price from my local dealer I jumped on it. I figured the systems could co-exist.Here's the deal: The Ranger is easier to use because you know exactly how much power you are using via the digital display. While the units are heavier than the Profoto product they seem to cycle forever and ever. At half power with the Profoto I get a very good 250 flashes. At the same power setting on the Elinchrom I get well over a thousand flashes.Both systems are good but the Elinchrome came with two batteries, two reflectors and more features for right around the same amount of money.I've used the new system for shoots on interior locations and for exterior locations and it works without a hitch.Gotchas: The Echrom uses a non standard sync cord socket so you'll either be triggering wirelessly or buying Elinchrom sync cords or expensive plug adapters. Also, like the other European flash company ( profoto) they use umbrellas with a thinner (7mm) shaft. Can't use any old umbrella in these units. It has to be 7mm. Softlighter2 makes a version that works. But eChrom makes a bunch of reasonably priced umbrellas to it's not a big worry. But I thought you'd like to know these two things before you buy one sight unseen. It could be a nasty surprise if you thought you'd be using current modifiers.All in all I'm a big fan of battery powered systems. I hate carrying around extension cords and such. Of the two I'd say: I'll keep the Profoto for those times when I'm working without and assistant and I want to go light and fast. For everything else, it's the Elinchrome Ranger.
