5Incredible
By L. Morgan
I just acquired one of these great guitars. Without even plugging in, I hear a real throaty and woody acoustic tone, and there is a nice low, consistent action up and down the fret board. Basically it plays like a dream. This opinion is shared by every one of my guitar playing friends as well! Then, when you plug it in, with the built in preamp, you are in for a surprise! I was truly amazed and feel this guitar is one very wonderful intrument, probably the greatest value I have ever received in a guitar. I have owned well over 30 instruments, so I hardly give such a rave review easily. If they are all like mine, you will be very happy!

5First Act custom VW garage master guitar
By J Oz
I was curious about these guitars as soon as I saw the television commercial with Slash jamming one. The price on these guitars was too high the first few years but I found one (White perloid) on Craigslist for $100 last year in it's original box with all the swag! It had been sitting in a box with almost no string tension for close to 6 years and like the review above stated "it needed work!" The neck was really dry and mine took more than 3 applications of lemon oil for the grain in the rosewood neck to tighten up. The truss rod was loose, the bridge too high, the intonation was not even close, and everything was loose. The frets on mine were/are pretty even and level.I read an article that stated First act purposely did not set these up and left that to the player. don't know if this is true but I have handled a number of these and I believe it.After getting this guitar setup I was completely blown away at the quality and sound. once the intonation is dialed this guitar is in tune every position of the neck and it stays in tune. Love the action and fret buzz is practically non-noticeable. The on board pre-amp provides some usable distortion. the pickups came stock waxed and I played this through a hand wired 18 amp and a 50 watt JMP 50 and it sounded really nice. Hands down this is the best $100 dollar guitar I have ever seen or played.these can still be had for a reasonable price and I would say that they are one of the best kept secrets out there . . .

3Very cool but needs work
By Charlo
The good: Super cool shape, super cool pick guard, onboard preamp is kind of cool, love the little VW fretboard inlay and the truss rod cover with a hand doing the Ronnie James Dio horns, pickups are MUCH nicer than expected and don't need a change, the guitar is super light but resonates pretty nicely, the string-through body is nice for a guitar in this price range, the strap is made of seat belt material and may be the most comfortable strap I've ever used, and the gig bag is really nicely made.A word about the preamp: The idea is that you can plug this guitar into any aux jack and presto: instant guitar amplification. While it does not sound terrible, you will not be mistaken for playing through a Dr. Z or a Fender Twin. It is kind of cool to use as an onboard effect while running into an actual tube amp to really fuzz up the sound. The not so good: Guitar is neck heavy- that really nice smooth soft strap will allow the guitar to take a nose dive if given a chance. I own two other SG shaped guitars and this guitar has worse neck dive than they do! A leather strap helps counter the neck dive. The tuners are cheap and should be upgraded if you were going to gig this guitar (Wilkinsons are cheap and decent replacments) Don't drill new holes and keep the orignals if you view this guitar as an a possible collectible. The strings were binding at the nut slightly but a few passes with a file and a little lubricant took care of that problem. The fretboard was so dry it needed 3 applications of lemon oil to come back to life and some frets need a level/crown as they are rough. Bear in mind people: this was originally a free guitar that came with your new VW. Still, the quality is above and beyond the First Act guitars being sold at Target. I would guess that the quality is somewhere in the neighborhood of the First Act Sheena (not the custom shop one- the mass produced version). Which is to say, it is comparable to any Dano guitar and some of the lower end matsumoko era 'lawsuit' guitars that have gone through the roof on ebay. (Think Conrad, Teisco, and Cortez- not Greco, Tokai Love Rock, and golden age Ibanez). This guitar may or may not be a collector's item some day. As a player, it needs a touch of TLC out of the box. Street price on the used market at the time of this writing is around $150-200 and not a bad deal at all if you are a fix-it-up-chappy. Some folks are willing to pay a little more for a minty version because of the possible collectibility. Given the skyrocketing price of once cheap import guitars (ie 'lawsuit' guitars, Teisco guitars, Silvertone guitars etc) it is not inconceivable that this will some day be collectible. Because it comes free with a car purchase, some folks toss it in the closet where it stays unplayed until they get around to spring cleaning. You can find them in mint condition on CL for cheaper than 'current market price' if you are lucky! YMMV-
