4Coleman Powermate 8kw generator
By Michael Owen
I've had this generator since December of 2006 and have used it at least half a dozen times during power outages here in suburban Seattle. It doesn't have the finesse of a Honda, meaning it's louder, consumes more fuel and has more emissions, but it costs perhaps 1/4 of what a similar Honda costs and it does the job nicely.During two substantial power outages, I've started it in the blink of an eye, and it's run flawlessly for days.I recommended it as a solid, reliable and easy-to-use emergency generator at at attractive price.FOLLOW UP!!!! It's now 2012 and it hasn't missed a beat. I stand by everything I said in my earlier review.

4Good generator
By Concerned Citizen
Like the previous reviewer I've had this generator since 2006. It's performed flawlessly during that time. Typically I only use it once or twice a year during a power outage, but in 2008, after hurricane Ike's remains caused a freak 6 hour 75 mile an hour windstorm in SW Ohio that downed power lines all over the area, it was in use for about 15 hours a day for five days while the power was out. I was the most popular person in the neighborhood as people recharged cell phones and laptops at my house, and I had one woman's insulin in my refrigerator.I had a transfer switch installed in my house and a 220v special outlet put in the garage that the generator connects to (the generator has a 220v outlet made just for this purpose). About a third of the circuits in the house are on the other side of the transfer switch so I have at least one light in every room, a couple of TVs, the refrigerator, and microwave. It also powers my server equipment in the basement. I had a specially made 50 foot cable to connect between the generator and the outlet in the garage so that I can place the generator well away from the garage to avoid any chance of fumes going from the garage into the house. At about 50% load the generator uses around 3/4 gallon of fuel per hour. The only things it's not able to run are the range, ovens, electric dryer (it will run the washer), and the geothermal heat pump. The only maintenance I do on the unit is change the oil every couple of years and I put fuel stabilizer in the gas tank. Then once a year I drain the gas, put it in my car, and replace with fresh gas and stabilizer. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that it is pretty darn loud.
